Management Team
William H. Markle, Chief Executive Officer
With a 25-year career in high-tech medical devices focusing on the Critical Care marketplace, Mr. Markle guides GluMetrics in developing a winning customer solution. He has previously been a senior member of two well-funded and successful medical device start-up companies: Tensys Medical and Masimo Corp. This strong record of successful fund-raising, visionary leadership, and building successful marketing, clinical support and direct sales teams is the foundation for Mr. Markle’s current and real-world perspective on the creation of shareholder value in the medical device sector. Mr. Markle is a graduate of Duke University and holds an MBA from Pepperdine University.
Thomas A. Peyser, PhD, VP Clinical Affairs
Dr. Peyser is a physicist with 25 years experience conducting applied research on a wide range of scientific problems. He has spent the last 15 years working on innovative technologies for continuous glucose monitoring, including projects at industry leading diabetes companies, as well as early-stage medical device companies. Dr. Peyser is a recognized expert in the development and clinical testing of continuous glucose monitoring systems. He is also the author of numerous papers and patents in the field as well as the recipient of two prestigious Federal government research awards for his previous work on fluorescent glucose sensors. Dr. Peyser is a graduate of New York University and holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Maryland.
Stuart Gallant, VP Product Development
Mr. Gallant has been in medical device development and management for over 35 years with extensive experience in the design, development and marketing of cardiovascular, patient monitoring and vital signs devices and systems. Initiating his career with Medtronic, he has subsequently been a successful medical device entrepreneur involved with creating, managing, and developing four prior medical device start-ups, including significant experience with venture-capital financed enterprises in senior management and Board positions. Mr. Gallant holds a MSBME from Drexel University and a MBA from Loyola College.
Mark Adler, VP Manufacturing
Mr. Adler’s experience spans a 16-year period within the medical device environment developing processes and product in the fields of cardiovascular, pulmonology and glucose monitoring. He has been part of many successful management teams, specifically: DVI/Guidant, Arterial Vascular Engineering/ Medtronic and most recently DexCom. His experience in the market introduction of innovative devices and expertise in the development of unique and novel processes includes many intellectual property innovations. Mr. Adler is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology and holds an MBA from Argosy University.
Paul Gasser, VP Regulatory Affairs
Mr. Gasser has over 25 years of experience in the medical device industry. He has secured numerous clearances and approvals for intravascular and implantable devices in the United States, Europe and internationally. Mr. Gasser previously managed regulatory affairs for four entrepreneurial companies including: Devax, Savacor (acquired by St. Jude Medical), Radiance Medical Systems (now Endologix) and Steri-Oss (acquired by Nobel Biocare). He is a graduate of UC Irvine and holds an MBA from Chapman University.
Scientific Advisors
David R. Markle, Ph.D.
Dr. Markle has 29 years of experience developing fiber optic based sensors for measuring blood parameters. Most recently, Dr. Markle was the cofounder of Glumetrics, Inc. and the primary architect of its continuous intravascular fiber optic glucose sensor and monitoring system. Prior to founding Glumetrics, Dr. Markle was responsible for the development of the Cardiomet and ParaTrend continuous blood gas monitors and sensors. These systems were capable of continuously measuring pO2, pCO2, pH and temperature in radial, femoral and umbilical arteries, as well as in the brain and cardiac bypass circuit. In addition, Dr. Markle has developed commercial fiber optic sensors for measuring pH and pCO2 in the congunctiva, and pH in cardiac muscle. Dr. Markle is a graduate of Duke University, holding a PhD in Biomedical Engineering.
Bakthan Singaram, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. , Professor of Chemistry, UCSC
Professor Singaram is a world-renowned expert in boron based chemistry and has many patents in this area covering both new reactions and new materials. His areas of interest and specific applications include silicon hydrides, stereo specific reactions, safer and more selective reducing reagents, organic light-emitting diodes, and glucose sensing. Dr. Singaram has been a full professor at UCSC for 13 years and has received numerous citations including the UCSC Outstanding Teaching Award. Prior to coming to UCSC in 1989, Dr. Singaram studied under and later directed the research group of Nobel laureate H. C. Brown at Purdue University.
Ritchie A. Wessling, Ph.D.
Dr. Wessling is a recognized world authority on polymer structures and properties with an emphasis on chemical fluorescence, polymer colloids and saran technologies. Retired from a distinguished 35-year career at Dow Chemical Corporation, Dr. Wessling is currently a visiting scientist in the Organic Chemistry Department of the University of California at Santa Cruz. Dr. Wessling provides an exceptional perspective and hands-on ability to integrate the academic research environment with the practical requirements of commercial industry.
